Why do I write?

The real story which gave me the push to start this newsletter came out of nowhere:
Once upon a time, I went on a date with a guy, we played a little question-answer and he asked,

“Your house, containing everything you own, catches fire. After saving your loved ones and pets, you have time to safely make a final dash to save any one item. What would it be? Why?”
I heard myself say, “my writings.”
He just looked at me, intrigued, “Why?”
I tried to explain hesitantly,
“I mean, I don’t write because I want to be a writer one day. If say in an alternate world, there was no profession of being a writer, no one made money from it, nobody published novels, nobody read them, even then I’d still write. I write without knowing why or how, I write because for me that’s the only way to be.”
Later on, after dumping the guy in ‘Never Never Land’, I thought about my answer in retrospect. Maybe, I was more of a writer than I thought of myself to be. That’s the thing about meeting new people, they make you re-discover yourself.
